Ferrybridge Next Generation Power Station
Providing flexible capacity for a secure and affordable energy system
We are committed to continuing the proud energy production heritage at Ferrybridge by actively developing Ferrybridge Next Generation Power Station.
In line with our purpose to be restless every day until we make electricity clean, affordable and available for all, we have committed to only building power stations with a clear route to decarbonisation. The Proposed Development is subject to ongoing technical, environmental and engineering studies.
The power station will be designed to run on hydrogen fuel or a blend of hydrogen and natural gas.
As the hydrogen fuel supply required for hydrogen operation may not be available from the start of operations, Ferrybridge Next Generation Power Station would be able to operate using natural gas until a secure supply of commercially viable hydrogen becomes available.
Developing the project
As Ferrybridge Next Generation Power Station would generate more than 50 Megawatts (MW) of power, it is classed as a Nationally Significant Infrastructure Project (NSIP) and requires approval under the Planning Act 2008.
This requires the project to submit a Development Consent Order (DCO) to the Planning Inspectorate, the agency responsible for making recommendations to the Secretary of State on NSIP applications.
Following the close of the statutory consultation period in October 2025, the team will review all the suggestions and comments we’ve received during the consultation period. We will analyse the feedback as we make further refinements to our proposed design.
A summary of the consultation feedback and how it has been considered will be published in a Consultation Report submitted with the DCO application, which is expected in January 2027.

Environmental assessments
The Infrastructure Planning (Environmental Impact Assessment) Regulations 2017 require an EIA (Environmental Impact Assessment) to be carried out before an application can be submitted to the Planning Inspectorate.
The EIA will assess the likely significant environmental effects of the Project during its construction, operation and maintenance phases, including decommissioning.
We have prepared a Preliminary Environmental Information Report (PEI Report), where we present our initial findings on the environmental impacts of the project, including measures to minimise or mitigate impacts. This report formed the basis of the statutory consultation phase held between 5 September and 19 October 2025.

A statutory consultation for Ferrybridge Next Generation took place between Friday 5 September and Sunday 19 October 2025. The consultation materials are listed below to view or download. All comments and responses received during the statutory consultation phase will be carefully reviewed by the project team.
