SSE Thermal can confirm it has sold its Fiddler’s Ferry Power Station site in the north-west of England to regeneration company Peel NRE. The iconic coal-fired power station, located in Warrington, officially closed in March 2020 after almost half a century of energy generation.

SSE Thermal and Equinor have entered into an agreement to acquire Triton Power Holdings Ltd from Energy Capital Partners for a total consideration of £341m shared equally between the partners.    The transaction represents another step forward for the two companies’ existing collaboration, supporting the long-term decarbonisation of the UK’s power system whilst contributing to security of supply and grid stability through flexible power generation in the shorter term.

SSE Thermal and Equinor award major FEED contract for Keadby 3 Carbon Capture Power Station

A project in the Humber which could become the UK’s first flexible power station equipped with carbon capture technology has taken a significant step forward. SSE Thermal and Equinor have officially awarded a Front End Engineering Design (FEED) contract for the proposed Keadby 3 Carbon Capture Power Station to a consortium comprising Aker Solutions, Siemens Energy and Doosan Babcock, with Aker Carbon Capture supporting on the carbon capture technology.

Carbon capture rates in FOCUSS as SSE Thermal secures BEIS grant

An R&D project which aims to reduce the cost of achieving high capture levels from flexible power stations – a key tool in decarbonisation efforts - has received backing from the UK Government. The Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy (BEIS) has awarded grant funding of £515,000 to the FOCUSS project, which is led by SSE Thermal and supported by AECOM and the University of Sheffield, with the US-based National Carbon Capture Center (NCCC) also involved in the collaboration.
