Stephen Wheeler is Managing Director of SSE Thermal, focused on decarbonising the company’s flexible generation, energy-from-waste and energy storage portfolio, and driving the transition to a net zero future. Stephen was previously Managing Director of SSE Ireland, and prior to this, General Manager (Ireland) of SSE Renewables.
Before joining SSE, he spent over 10 years working with ABB and Siemens internationally, specialising in the development and construction of thermal generation assets. Stephen is a graduate of Electrical Engineering at University College Dublin, with an MBA from the UCD Michael Smurfit Graduate Business School, and a past Chairman of the Irish Wind Energy Association (IWEA).

Mark Hayward is Director of Operations and Maintenance at SSE Thermal, responsible for the company’s operational portfolio, including delivery of business strategy and ensuring compliance with all safety, health, and environmental standards. Mark has extensive experience in the energy industry and has held a number of leadership roles, including Station Manager at Fiddler’s Ferry and Ferrybridge ‘C’ Power Stations. He is a Chartered Engineer and a Fellow of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers.

Ann Gray is Director of Commercial at SSE Thermal, responsible for securing and maximising value from our operational assets. Since graduating in Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Ann has worked in the utilities sector for almost 30 years, including five years as a regulator in the water industry. In the energy industry, she has held roles in businesses focused on distribution, transmission, energy portfolio management, and now thermal energy.

Charlie Cryans is Director of Construction at SSE Thermal. He is responsible for ensuring all projects are consistently governed, executed, and delivered safely and on time. Charlie has over 40 years’ experience in the energy industry in areas including upstream oil and gas, power generation, energy-from-waste, carbon capture, and biomass. He is a qualified thermal, acoustics and cryogenic engineer. Prior to joining SSE, Charlie gained extensive experience working with companies including BP, Shell, Jacobs Engineering, G & H Montage, ABB, Rolls Royce, Andritz, DSL, and Interserve.

Marc Rudd is Director of Engineering and Innovation at SSE Thermal. He was previously Station Manager at Fiddler’s Ferry Power Station, having working at the station in several management positions since 2000. Marc has over thirty years’ experience in maintenance, project, and asset management and is a Fellow of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers. He holds a BEng in Mechanical Engineering and an MSc in Engineering Project Management.

John Johnson is Director of Development at SSE Thermal, responsible for the company’s development ambitions and setting the strategic direction of the business. John was previously Head of Development for SSE in Ireland, with responsibility for both thermal and renewables projects. Prior to joining SSE, he worked internationally with Siemens. He holds a degree in Chemical Engineering from Queen’s University, Belfast and an MBA from Trinity College, Dublin.

Tony Thomas is Director of Asset Management and Performance at SSE Thermal, responsible for asset management and planning, continuous improvement, data and analytics, and risk management and compliance. Tony joined SSE in 2007, becoming Station Manager at Peterhead Power Station in 2010. Prior to this, he gained extensive experience in electricity generation working for utilities in the UK and South Africa.

Martin Beattie is SSE Thermal’s Finance Director. Martin joined SSE in 2008 and has worked in a variety of finance roles across the company’s energy generation, trading and supply business units. He is a qualified Chartered Accountant having trained with KPMG.

Marian Troy is Head of Corporate Affairs for SSE Thermal, with responsibility for all communications, policy and stakeholder engagement. Marian has worked in energy policy and regulation roles for over ten years, beginning with an internship in the European Commission, followed by the Commission for the Regulation of Utilities (CRU) and Endesa Ireland, before joining SSE. Marian is a barrister and town planner by background, having studied in Trinity College, Dublin, University College Dublin, and the Honorable Society of King’s Inns.

Zahida Zakir is SSE Thermal’s HR Business Partner, responsible for all people-related matters for employees. Zahida was previously HR Business Partner for the SSE Networks business. Prior to joining SSE, she gained experience working for Courtaulds, Reckitt Benckiser, Scottish and Newcastle, Scottish Power, and Peugeot Motors. Zahida is a Chartered Fellow of the CIPD and holds an MA in HR Management from the Warwick Business School.
