SSE Thermal opens consultation for proposed Keadby 3 low-carbon power station

22 Jun 2020

SSE Thermal has today (22 June) opened a stage one public consultation on a proposed low-carbon power station, known as Keadby 3, in North Lincolnshire.

The proposed development comprises the construction, operation and maintenance of a low-carbon CCGT generating station with a capacity of up to 910MW electrical output.

In line with its vision for a net zero future, SSE Thermal has committed to not building any further power stations without a clear route to decarbonisation. Keadby 3 will only be built if it can be equipped with post-combustion carbon capture technology (CCS) or use hydrogen as a low-carbon fuel.

Crucially, the CCS and hydrogen infrastructure supported by low-carbon thermal generation projects like Keadby 3 can also help decarbonise major industrial activity in the region.

In April 2020, SSE Thermal signed an agreement, alongside 10 other leading energy and industrial companies, to transform the Humber region into the world’s first ‘zero-carbon cluster’ by 2040. This initiative is focused on using shared CCS and hydrogen infrastructure to decarbonise both energy generation and heavy industry, unlocking billions of pounds in regional investment and creating and safeguarding thousands of local jobs.

The Keadby 3 project is in the early stages of development and no final investment decision has yet been made.

Andrew Underwood, Lead Project Development Manager for Keadby 3, said:

“The decarbonisation of energy generation and industrial activity is critical to the UK achieving its climate action goals. We believe projects like Keadby 3 can help drive a green economic recovery in the coming years, injecting billions into the economy and creating and protecting high-quality jobs.

“While we would prefer to be holding a face-to-face information event during this stage one consultation period, unfortunately this is not possible due to the coronavirus restrictions. However, we are committed to carrying out a clear, informative and robust consultation process, and we ask local residents to please join the interactive exhibition on our website and contact us with any questions or queries.”

The stage one public consultation opens today, Monday 22 June, and will close at 5pm on Monday 27 July. Due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, it will not be possible to host a face-to-face public information event during this stage of the consultation. However, all materials will be available online and there will be an interactive project exhibition held from 9am on Thursday 25 June.
